Microdentistry

Microdentistry is a new, alternative approach to traditional dentistry that uses new instruments and techniques to:

  • Find and treat tooth decay as early as possible
  • Remove a minimum amount of tooth structure
  • Place the smallest restoration possible
  • Ensure the restorations looks great and are long-lasting

A cornerstone in microdentisty,is the use of air abrasion. Air abrasion is a relatively new process in which a fine, pressurized stream of aluminum oxide powder is used to remove small amounts of decay from the tooth's outer enamel layer. Used in plac e of the traditional handpiece (drill), air abrasion virtually eliminates the discomfort often associated with preparing and filling cavities.

Another new development important in microdentistry is cavity detection dye. We use cavity detection dye when evaluating teeth for decay. We place the dye in suspicious areas and then rinse it away. The dye only remains where cavities are present. We can now detect cavities that would have been too small to detect previously.

After removing all of the decay from the tooth, we then restore the teeth using special instruments and new tooth-colored bonding materials. The net result is extremely small restorations that conserve the maximum amount of tooth structure.

Though procedures in microdentistry aren't necessarily quicker than traditional methods, we can often avoid the need for anesthetic. This means you won't have to wait for your mouth to become numb before the start of the procedure. With the reduced ne e d for anesthetic, we can complete more work on each appointment, and we can work on multiple areas throughout your mouth. You'll also enjoy the reduced noise and lack of pressure when using air abrasion; it's much quieter than the traditional dental drillced ne . Microdentistry is a proactive, preventive approach that allows us to catch cavities early and place the smallest possible bonded, tooth-colored restorations.
